Gum Disease - what exactly is gum disease
Gum disease occurs when the bone and tissues surrounding the teeth become infected. This is known as periodontal disease.
There are two stages of gum disease. The milder form of gum disease is known as gingivitis and the more serious condition is known as periodontitis. Gingivitis only affects the gums and the tissue surrounding the teeth. Once the disease becomes more pronounced it becomes periodontitis where it gets worse and begins to spread below the gum line damaging tissues and bone that support the teeth.
